Death and Downtime Why The Recent Slowdown on JobMob

Death and Downtime Why The Recent Slowdown on JobMob 14 Only 4 new articles have appeared on JobMob in the past 6 weeks, and none in the past 3. What's going on? My apologies As soon as I understood that there would be a slowdown, I should have posted a notice so you would know what to expect until everything had come back to normal. Better late than never. Feel free to leave a comment below if you feel that I left you waiting, it's deserved. So what happened? Read on… Catastrophic hosting problems… now fixed For almost 4 years now, JobMob has been growing constantly and with big plans for this year (more on that soon!), my team (yes, I now have a team helping me) and I began preparing for the future with a move to a new web hosting company that would give us much room for growth.eval Unfortunately, after all our research to make the right choice, things didn't go as planned. If you had trouble visiting JobMob at any time during October and part of November, you know what I'm referring to. With the site so unstable, there was no point in posting anything new for you if the main consequence would be for the site to become unavailable for you and everyone else. (Although it's not directly related to job search, I will soon write an article about the hosting ordeal â€" 4 different companies are involved! â€" for all the current future bloggers and website owners that follow JobMob.)eval However, just as the site had stabilized and I thought I'd get back to posting again… My Uncle Harvey died His passing away was completely unexpected. It's been almost 2 weeks since my uncle was rushed to the hospital with a brain hemorrhage. Although we hoped throughout the weekend that the doctors' pessimistic view was simply a way of preparing the family for the worst, the worst is what we got. I'm just glad that he didn't suffer any pain during the quick deterioration, a fact which thankfully limited my aunt and cousins' suffering as well. Like with my own father â€" even though they weren't related â€" I could spend hours talking about Uncle Harvey and it would be fitting, because he was known for being able to ramble on discuss anything he loved (and even somethings he didn't love) for hours on end. A recently-retired librarian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Institute of Archaeology and an old-school bartender, he had many fascinating things to tell about what he knew yet would just as happily listen in fascination about what he didn't know, usually accompanied in the background by the sounds of Kol Hamusica (Israel's publicly-subsidized classical radio station), whose every piece of music he could name in seconds (and would). We miss him dearly. May his memory be a blessing. If you post condolences in the comments area here below, I'll pass them on to my aunt and cousins. Thank you. Some other mentions of his passing: Sad news â€" Zvi (Harvey) Schneider has passedaway News of the Institute of Archaeology Regular JobMob articles will continue next Monday, November 22nd 2010.

The Rise of the Solo Female Traveler

The Rise of the Solo Female Traveler They say experiences are much better investments than material things. I’m so happy that nowadays, people believe in this idea and in turn, have put travel on the top of their lists. Travel usually entails being with our family, friends or a special other. After all, going through adventures is fun with company. However, there is an upward trend happening at present that has launched quite a phenomenon among females. Nowadays, we see the rise of the solo female traveler. According to the 2015 Visa Global Travel Intentions study, there has been an increase to 24% in 2015 from last year’s 15% when it comes to solo travel. More than just a sense of more independence and indulging in the ever needed “me time”, solo travelers get to have their pick of things to do and places to see. There is great appeal in no adjusting and compromising to anyone else’s preferences/personality/requests because the only person that you have to make sure is happy is you. Even activities that used to be enjoyed in groups such as volunteering, engaging in sports events, backpacking, etc, are now being enjoyed more by solo travelers. You have the world in your hands and only your choice matters. Of the very plenty female travel enthusiasts out there, you’d be surprised to know that 50 percent travel alone. As a female solo traveler, I can definitely attest to the exhilaration and excitement that flying solo provides. After every trip, you just feel more energized, refreshed and confident, knowing that you have survived such a daunting task such as going on a trip by yourself. If you haven’t tried, I sincerely suggest adding solo travel into your bucket list! There are many resources out there to help you get prepared for such a task. If however, planning a solo trip is too much for you, you can always avail of all inclusive holidays that could cater to what you want while still knowing that you’re out there on your own. Don’t be scared to go solo. There is so much of the world to see, and going at it alone just makes it all the more fun and challenging. A journey to self-discovery, without the pressures of also making sure that your company is having fun, awaits you. Reallywhat are you waiting for?

Use self-esteem as a career tool

Use self-esteem as a career tool I am fascinated by self-esteem because its such a huge differentiator among everyone even among the smart and talented. And I dont think people can fake it. Maybe it is my own, overzealous self-esteem when it comes to my ability to read self-esteem, but I think people reveal their own levels no matter how hard they try not to. And I dont think Im the only person who is fascinated. I read commentary about Paris Hilton, (that I have spent way too much time trying to retrieve online,) that said that the reason we are fascinated by her is that she has an unshakable sense of self. You can argue that you dont like who she is, but its hard to argue that youve ever seen her feeling insecure about who she is. A lot of self-esteem is dependent on self-knowledge. Knowing what you want and whats important to you. This is why the infamous Starbucks memo is infamous because the chairman of the company outlines the companys weaknesses so clearly and accurately. The memo shows unabashed and on-target self-reflection. I want that. I want what the chairman has and also what Paris has. One of my biggest worries is that I project an image of myself that I do not fully understand. And this is, of course, a career issue. The people who do best at getting the career they want are the people who understand how they appear to others. But you dont want to put too much stock in how others view you. Hold on to yourself in the face of peoples opinions; this is what I tell myself all the time. And then I think about how Seth Godin does not accept comments on his blog because he thinks he reacts too strongly to how other people see him. Maybe Seth could take some lessons from Paris in this regard. Meanwhile, Seths idea that he can only hold on to his self-esteem if he is not exposed to other peoples direct input seems a tenuous spot to be in during the era of Web 2.0. I think self-esteem will be different soon. After all, millennials are the self-esteem generation, and maybe they will commodify self-esteem in a way that is not even accessible to Seth or me. Their parents brought them up with the idea that the most important thing was self-esteem they played soccer games where everyones a winner because everybody played. Some people call millennials narcissists, but I think those people are taking their own self loathing out those bursting-with-confidence twentysomethings. There is a sense of celebrity that permeates millennials. They have been online for so long that they assume everyone is looking at them, no matter where they are. In this way, millennials have a strong sense of self that they assert constantly. And when I was interviewing Rebecca Blood (a celebrity in her own right at least in the blogosphere), she said that celebrity is so mainstream among kids today that young Hollywood debutantes may be better role models for how to act than the kids own parents. Soon after that, I saw a very public scene of a girl getting dumped, and I realized that its a great example of a seemingly mainstream young person being able to hold onto her self-esteem by adapting to celebrity status in a matter of minutes. Some of you will argue that celebrity status has nothing to do with self-esteem. But I cant help thinking there is a connection between ones ability to live in front of a web cam and ones ability to hold onto a sense of self no matter what is going on around her. So maybe the best training for being successful at work is to learn to think about yourself in terms of celebrity before you get there. Because the people most secure with themselves are the ones who stand out in the workplace.

Are You Stuck Maybe a Holistic Coach is the Right Solution for You

Are You Stuck Maybe a Holistic Coach is the Right Solution for You Your job is what you do, not who you are, right? The two may be aligned more closely than you think â€" and you can add in how you feel as well. That’s according to Nancy Scott, M.A., a holistic career coach based in Minneapolis. Scott believes that true change â€" career or other kinds â€" happens best when approached holistically. The dictionary defines “holistic” as “concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the  analysis  of, treatment of, or dissection into parts.” In medicine, holistic practitioners don’t just examine the part of you that’s injured or ailing. They look at your mind, body, spirit and environment to determine what might have caused your disease. Scott takes the same approach to her coaching practice. She created a program called DiVA (Dreams in Vivid Action), a group coaching practice that helps women in transition achieve their goals. She says, “When women experience a quantum event â€" a shock to the system  like a layoff, getting fired, losing a spouse, their first instinct is to make a change in their lives. They gravitate toward self-improvement.” Scott should know; she lost her husband to cancer when he was just 41 years old. Scott had spent her career in real estate sales and training. After her husband’s death, she went onto get a Master’s degree that would allow her to work more deeply with women who were seeking meaning or going through transitions in their lives. Embed from Getty Imageswindow.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'5_-OE2rmR5lE2fdevEbl7A',sig:'aw-DMDNgiLrjV7u7n2notUVdo8wFvd0NQJuGLGrWfGI=',w:'507px',h:'338px',items:'542725391',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })}); The first DiVA cohort came together in 2006 as a focus group on the future of real estate sales as a career. As the women discussed what they really wanted from their careers, Scott helped them articulate their dreams and develop a plan for achieving them. One member of the group had lost her mother, father, husband and special needs sister, all within a period of about two years. It became apparent during the program that she needed to get through her grief before she could see a clear path to a better job.   In fact, she grew close to another program participant and eventually went into partnership with her. Scott works with groups for nine months, and the length of time is not a coincidence. “We sometimes call ourselves doulas, bringing ideas into the world,” she says of herself and her coaching partner. They specialize in helping people who are committed to change, but unable to make it happen on their own. They feel what Scott calls the “whisper of discontent,” but who may not be able to articulate a vision for a more fulfilling life. Scott says that it’s hard for modern workers to make space in their lives to dream and think about what they really want. “We are filled to the brim, but not fulfilled,” she says. “We are busy in the same way a hamster in a wheel is busy. We go round and round, believing we’re getting somewhere, but we wind up in the same place.” Scott’s coaching helps clients look inward, to slow down enough to be able to hear their inner voice â€" the one who knows what their spirit is seeking. Here are Scotts’ tips for knowing when you might be stuck â€" and when getting a coach might be an option: You’ve had the same New Year’s resolutions year after year with no progress You’ve gone through a major transition or loss in your life You are unhappy where you are, but have no idea what would make you happy You feel busy, but not fulfilled. Nancy Scott is fond of quoting Mark Twain: “I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I cant find anybody who can tell me what they want.” If you’re having trouble figuring out what’s next, a coach or a Mastermind Group may help get you started on a new path.

Are You Doing Enough To Land That Dream Role Find Out Here - CareerMetis.com

Are You Doing Enough To Land That Dream Role Find Out Here A rewarding career is an aspiration shared by millions, but landing that dream job isn’t easy. In today’s climate, many people are happy to have any job. But that doesn’t mean you should give up on your perfect role.Photo Credit â€" Pexels.comThe competition for vacancies is fierce than ever. Whether you’re a graduate or someone looking for a change of direction doesn’t matter. Following the right pathway is the only way you’ll ever have a fighting chance of getting hired. Here are five simple tricks to help lead you towards that destination.1. Clarify Your VisionIt’s never too late to make a career change, but you need it to be the right one. Even if you’re simply looking for a more senior role in your current field, conducting research is key. LinkedIn is a great place to build contacts and ask questions.evalMeanwhile, you should also make the effort to learn about salaries, responsibilities and other features. Without that extensive knowledge, you could end up chas ing a dream that you don’t even want.2. Perfect ApplicationsA winning resume can have a huge impact on your chances of landing an interview. However, in today’s climate, creatives may want to build a portfolio website or use videos to bring their applications to life. As for written applications and cover letters, though, the most important thing is to stop using a generic document.Employers can tell when you have done this. Quite frankly, if you can’t be bothered to spend a few minutes on the application process, it doesn’t bode well.Source â€" Flickr.com3. Invest In AppearancesIf you think that you’ll be judged solely on the quality of your resume, you’re very wrong. Potential employers will look at various elements that don’t necessarily impact your work. Your physical looks are high on the agenda, so dressing to impress is vital. This will show professionalism and attention to detail. Moreover, people tend to link attractiveness with trust and likeability. It might not be fair, but you cannot ignore it either.4. Master InterviewsSecuring an interview signals a major step in the right direction, and this is your chance to shine. So make sure you do. Being prepared for the process isn’t just about knowing a little about the role and the company. You also need to promote yourself during the interview in a positive but honest manner. Employers can already see what skills you have from your application. Show them that you have the personality and character to fit in well, and you cannot go wrong.5. Complete The ProcessevalThe most common mistake made by candidates is that they think the interview signals the end. It doesn’t. Taking the right steps after the interview could make all the difference. Once again, it shows that you want to be taken seriously while leaving a far greater impression. If nothing else, it provides you with the self-assurance that you’ve taken every possible step to land the role. Whether you get it or not, this is one of the most important outcomes of all.

Is Your Next Role In Health - CareerAlley

Is Your Next Role In Health - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Whether youre stuck for choices, need a change in your life, or want a role, job or career that can fulfill you, you might want to look into a career in the field of healthcare. The world of healthcare offers an abundance of fulfilling and satisfying roles and opportunities, so your background might not matter there could be a perfect role for you, and even then, if youre not a fit right now, you could be with some training. Now, when most people think of healthcare they think of doctors. Thats right! Doctors have always signified health and care in society, so it is only right that people think of doctors when they think of health. So, when you think of healthcare, you might automatically think you need to be a doctor to get paid in the healthcare industry not true. However, if you do want to train to be a doctor you need to set aside a large portion of time to train over a large number of years. Youd need to earn a number of higher education diplomas in skilled fields, pass a number of tests and train as a doctor and that can take up to and over a decade. However, as hard as training as a doctor is the role is rewarding. It is never too late to train as a doctor, so if it is something that you desperately want to do with your life, consider finding a path to get into it straight away. Nursing staff do help run the world of healthcare though. As incredible as doctors are, without the help of nurses and healthcare assistants, they wouldnt be able to do much! Nursing and training as some kind of healthcare assistant will allow you a path into the hands-on side of the healthcare profession. The training will be less intensive than that of a doctor, but it will still take time and dedication. There are usually pretty simple pathways into nursing through programs and dedicating degrees, so if you want to get involved, you can. However, there are plenty of other roles available in the world of health that you might consider. These are better if you might not have the time you want to train up or if youve spent a large part of your life in another career path. These roles are usually involved with the legal side of health, administration, bureaucracy and of course, finance. If youve got a background in these areas, you might translate well to a relevant field behind the scenes of healthcare.Despite the fact that these behind the scenes roles need experience, some of the more higher level opportunities will require training and qualifications. You might need to be a master of health service management if you want to manage a healthcare practice or even run a ward at a hospital. These things need to always be considered before you jump ship. There will always be some aspect of education and learning involved in healthcare simply because everyone involved in it needs to have a basic understanding of healthcare to perform their role! However, if youve already got a background in administration, management or finance, you might find it easier to jump into a role helping a medical center balance its books. This might be preferable if youve already gained a diploma as well considering that you might not want to go back to school and start all over again. Unless of course, you do want to get involved in nursing or becoming a doctor! So, if youve got qualifications in an area of business or finance you are needed in the world of healthcare. Hospitals and practices need administrators to ensure that paperwork and records are managed well, that patients are dealt with and that appointments are made. If your background is in finance, you are welcome as well. A lot of healthcare centers around the bills owed to hospitals by insurance companies, which doctors might not be able to chase up finance experts and credit experts can find a lot of work in helping doctors chase payment and cash from insurance agents. Of course, you can also get in one the ground floor of healthcare with administration work. Administrators are the foundation of healthcare and ensure that a doctor manages their time while ensuring that patients are seen. Administrators are on the front lines of healthcare and this is a role that offers a lot of upwards mobility. (source) So, no matter your background there are certainly plenty of ways that one could get involved with healthcare. We are always eager to hear from our readers. Best Ways to Motivate Your Lazy Coworkers - Punched Clocks

Best Ways to Motivate Your Lazy Coworkers - Punched Clocks There is nothing worse than showing up to work every day and giving it your all, when it seems like the rest of your team is just there to take up space and rake in a paycheck. It can throw your whole day off and make it harder to get your job done, especially if managers or team leaders arent stepping up to help motivate their team. If a lazy coworker is dragging your team down, here are some tips and tricks to help you know how to motivate a lazy coworker. Ask, Dont Order If you dont have the title manager after your name, ordering other employees to get to work isnt going to get anything done â€" and will probably earn you a few enemies in the process. Youll have to be a bit sneaky here. Instead of ordering your coworkers around, try asking. Ask them for help with your project, or ask to help them with whatever theyre working on. It might not always work, but sometimes all a lazy coworker needs is a gentle push in the right direction to get them working again. Be Thoughtful A thoughtful gesture never hurts anyone. Caffeine might not encourage your coworker to work faster, but a grabbing someone a snack or a coffee can earn you some goodwill and might make them more likely to get to work if you ask nicely. Something for Nothing Ever heard of a little thing called quid pro quo? You dont expect to get something for nothing when you go to the store, would you? Why would you expect your coworkers to do something for you without getting something in return? Offer to do something for your lazy coworker in exchange for something you need done. The more unsavory the task you offer to do â€" like taking out the trash or cleaning the bathrooms â€" the better the response will be. Communicate If youve got a huge quota or a massive to-do list, communicating with your coworkers can be something that gets neglected. Forming professional relationships and networking can be a useful tool, but its something you have to take time to nurture. Send an email, text, private message or even handwritten note to see how your coworkers or deskmates are doing and if they need any help. This is one of the best ways to motivate lazy coworkers because you might learn something new or find something they are stuck on that you can help with. Be Positive Positive reinforcement isnt just useful for teaching children or training pets. It can also be a vital tool for encouraging lazy coworkers to get their jobs done. Everyone loves to be appreciated for their work, and offering positive feedback when your coworkers do something right might be the one thing you need to encourage them to pick up the slack. No Tattling No one likes a tattletale â€"  we arent five anymore! Tattling to your boss that your coworker isnt doing their job will cause resentment and can make you look bad, too. Instead, if you have to take this problem up the chain of command, make sure you phrase it properly. Dont just jump to the problem of the lazy coworker. Instead, explain that youre having trouble finishing team projects because one individual isnt pulling their weight. If they ask for a review, be honest but dont start out picking apart your coworkers work ethic out of the gate. Lay Off the Water Cooler Gossip is a big part of the workplace, no matter how hard you try to keep it from spreading. People love to talk, and they love to talk about each other. If you want to encourage your coworkers to stop being lazy, one of the first things you should do is to lay off the water cooler gossip. Dont talk about them behind their back. Step Up Sometimes, all you need to encourage a lazy coworker is a good leader. If you dont have a team leader or someone to take charge, it might be up to you to do just that. Even if you dont have the title you need to be an official leader, you can still step up. You need to think outside the box a little and ask instead of giving orders. People will naturally start to follow a good leader, but you need to work inside the hierarchy to get things done. Protect Yourself A lazy coworker isnt just annoying. If theyre slacking and your work is suffering as a result, it could put your job in jeopardy too. Dont let them affect your progress or distract you from getting your work done, and if it harms team projects, its important to keep the blame from falling on you. You dont need to take the fall for someone elses poor work ethic. No one likes to deal with lazy coworkers, but you will run across them in nearly every industry. Gentle motivation and positive reinforcement can be great tools to help you keep them moving, but if it isnt enough, you may have to break out the big guns. That means taking it up the chain of command. Its not the perfect solution, but it can help keep things moving and is one of the ways you can motivate a lazy coworker.
